Ninety Percent of Painting Happens Before the Paint

Everyone thinks painting is about the paint. It is not. It is about everything that happens before the first coat, and that is the only reason one paint job still looks sharp after eight years while another is peeling in eighteen months.

R&L Contractor has painted homes across New York for more than twenty-five years, interiors and exteriors, and we price the preparation honestly instead of pretending it does not exist.

Preparation Is the Job

Scraping what is loose. Sanding what is glossy so the new coat has something to hold. Filling cracks and nail pops. Caulking the gaps where trim meets wall. Priming bare or repaired surfaces, and spot priming stains so they do not bleed through and haunt you.

None of this is visible in the finished room. All of it is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that fails. When a quote comes in far below everyone else, this is what is missing from it.

Interior Work

Walls, ceilings, trim, doors and cabinets. Furniture covered, floors protected, edges cut by hand rather than taped and hoped for. We work in a sequence that keeps the house livable, and we clean up at the end of each day rather than at the end of the project.

Color is part of the service. We will tell you honestly how a color will read in your light, which is not always what it looked like on the chip under fluorescent store lighting.

Exterior Work

New York weather is hard on exterior paint: freeze and thaw, humidity, sun on the south face. Exterior painting is mostly repair and prep, and it has a weather window. Painting a surface that is too cold or still damp from a rain two days ago is a guaranteed failure, and we would rather move the schedule than deliver that.

We also look at why the last coat failed. Peeling paint on a soffit is usually not a paint problem, it is a moisture problem, and repainting without fixing it is a way of spending money twice.

The Result

Clean lines, even coverage, no roller marks, no drips on the trim. A free walkthrough, honest pricing in writing and a crew that treats the prep as the job. Let us take a look at your walls.

Cabinets, Trim and the Hard Surfaces

Painting cabinets and trim is a different job from painting walls. It demands degreasing, deglossing, the right primer and patience between coats, and it fails visibly when any of that is rushed.

We do it properly or we tell you it is not worth doing. Free walkthrough, honest pricing in writing, and licensed, insured crews serving New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
